About Making Tracks
Across Australia, through national and state parks and public and private land, walking tracks ranging in length from a few hundred metres to hundreds of kilometres offer a unique opportunity to experience our country with minimal environmental impact.

The value of the tracks to the environment is considerable; they protect immediate vegetation from the impact of human traffic and erosion and reduce the affects of sediment run-off, both locally and downstream.

Walking tracks and trails act as pointers to some of the most interesting areas, interpretative signage can provide educational information, and track grading allows access to visitors who may not otherwise be able to make the journey.

Until Making Tracks, there has been no national program for creating and conserving tracks and trails. Resources have been provided, often on an ad hoc basis, by a range of stakeholders, including local community groups. The results have often been less than satisfactory with sporadic attention and consequent track deterioration.

By supporting the Making Tracks program Australian Paper, in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), aims to increase the value, usefulness and effectiveness of walking tracks and trails in Australia.

Making Tracks is designed to create ongoing partnerships between the CVA, track managers and the local and wider communities through volunteer involvement.

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) is the largest practical conservation group in Australia, managing community involvement in almost 1,500 conservation projects across Australia each year. CVA is a not-for-profit, non political, independent community based organisation with its head office in Ballarat
